This drug is a combination of magnesium sulfate and ropivacaine, investigated as an analgesic regimen for regional anesthesia. Ropivacaine is a long-acting amide-type local anesthetic that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby inhibiting the conduction of nerve impulses. Magnesium sulfate is added as an adjuvant; it acts as a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist and a calcium channel blocker. The addition of magnesium sulfate is intended to enhance the quality and duration of the sensory block and provide better postoperative pain control while potentially reducing the requirement for systemic opioids. In clinical trials conducted by Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, this combination was specifically evaluated for its efficacy in scalp blocks for patients undergoing craniotomy.
