Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium sulfate + dextrose is a sterile intravenous combination drug consisting of magnesium sulfate (an inorganic magnesium salt) and dextrose (a simple sugar, glucose) in water for injection. This formulation is used clinically for the prevention and control of seizures associated with preeclampsia and eclampsia. The mechanism of action of magnesium sulfate includes antagonism of neuromuscular transmission by decreasing acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction and reducing muscle fiber excitability, producing a depressant effect on central nervous system activity and a vasodilatory effect on smooth muscle. Magnesium decreases neuronal excitability and protects against convulsions in preeclampsia/eclampsia. Dextrose serves as a vehicle for dilution and may provide calories. This combination is primarily indicated for intravenous infusion in obstetric emergencies but may be used in other settings requiring rapid intravenous magnesium supplementation[1][8][9].
