Overview
Magnesium sulfate and ketamine are being investigated as topical gargle solutions for the prevention of postoperative sore throat (POST), a common complication following endotracheal intubation. Ketamine is a phencyclidine derivative that acts as a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, providing local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects when used as a gargle. Magnesium sulfate similarly functions as an NMDA receptor antagonist and a voltage-gated calcium channel blocker, which helps to inhibit central and peripheral sensitization. In a randomized controlled trial conducted by the University Tunis El Manar, these two agents were compared to evaluate their efficacy in reducing the incidence and severity of POST, cough, and hoarseness in patients undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia.
