Magnesium trisilicate is an inorganic compound and small molecule antacid used for the symptomatic relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), dyspepsia, and peptic ulcers. It acts by chemically neutralizing gastric hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thereby increasing gastric pH and reducing the acidity of the gastric contents. In clinical practice, it is often categorized as a traditional non-alginate antacid, distinguishing it from raft-forming agents like sodium alginate which provide a physical barrier against reflux. Magnesium trisilicate is frequently formulated in combination with other antacids such as aluminum hydroxide or magnesium carbonate to provide rapid and sustained neutralization of stomach acid. It is widely available as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication in various oral dosage forms, including tablets and liquid suspensions.
