Overview

This is a foaming antacid combination medication used for the symptomatic treatment of peptic ulcers, heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. The formulation contains aluminum hydroxide gel, magnesium trisilicate, sodium bicarbonate, and alginic acid (alginate). The mechanism of action involves neutralizing gastric acid by increasing the pH of gastric juice through a neutralization reaction. Magnesium trisilicate also precipitates colloidal silica, which coats the gastrointestinal mucosa, providing additional protection. The gelatinous silicon dioxide formed by the reaction with gastric contents protects ulcerated mucosal surfaces and promotes healing. This is classified as a drug combination in the antacids class.
