Magnesium valproate is a salt form of valproic acid, an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug. It is primarily used to treat epilepsy (both localized and generalized seizures), bipolar disorder (especially manic episodes), and for the prevention of migraine headaches. The mechanism of action involves stabilizing neuronal activity by increasing brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, through inhibition of GABA degradative enzymes such as GABA transaminase and succinate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase, as well as inhibiting GABA reuptake. Magnesium valproate also blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, contributing to its anticonvulsant effects. Additionally, it acts as a histone deacetylase inhibitor with epigenetic effects[4][6][8][10].
