Magnogene

Magnogene is a pharmaceutical product primarily composed of magnesium bromide hexahydrate, historically utilized as a neurosedative and for the correction of magnesium deficiency. As a source of magnesium, it provides an essential mineral cofactor involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including those responsible for energy metabolism and protein synthesis. The magnesium ion serves as a physiological antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and a natural calcium channel blocker, which contributes to its neuro-stabilizing and muscle-relaxant properties. The bromide component historically provided additional central nervous system depressant effects by enhancing GABAergic inhibitory neurotransmission. While indicated for conditions such as neuromuscular irritability, spasmophilia, and mild anxiety, its clinical use has largely been superseded by other magnesium salts and modern sedative-hypnotics due to the risk of bromide accumulation and associated toxicity.
