Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnolia flos extract is a botanical preparation derived from the dried flower buds of various species of the genus *Magnolia*, most commonly *Magnolia biondii*, *Magnolia officinalis*, and sometimes *Magnolia obovata*. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is known as Flos Magnoliae or Xin Yi Hua and is used primarily to treat nasal congestion, sinusitis, colds, coughs, and headaches. The main bioactive constituents include terpenoids (such as 1,8-cineole and linalool), lignans (notably magnolin and eudesmin), flavonoids (like tiliroside), phenolic acids (such as vanillic acid), and other compounds with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties[4][5][6][7]. Mechanistically, these components are believed to exert effects by inhibiting inflammatory mediators (e.g., interleukin-4 production) and disrupting bacterial cell membranes. Modern research supports its use for sinus decongestion due to anti-inflammatory activity; in vitro studies also show antioxidant effects[5][6]. It is available in various forms including powders for oral use or inhalation.
