Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnoliae flos extract is a botanical extract derived from the dried flower buds of *Magnolia denudata*, *Magnolia fargesii*, *Magnolia biondii*, or related *Magnolia* species (family Magnoliaceae). It has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine for treating allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal congestion, headache, and toothache. The extract exerts its therapeutic effects primarily by inhibiting store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) via the ORAI1 channel, blocking the calcium-activated chloride channel anoctamin-1 (ANO1), and acting as an antagonist of the platelet-activating factor receptor (PTAFR). These actions lead to the inhibition of mast cell degranulation, histamine release, and cytokine secretion from T cells. A specific standardized extract, NDC-052, has been clinically investigated as an oral add-on therapy for mild-to-moderate asthma in patients receiving inhaled corticosteroids. Additionally, the extract has been researched for its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and potential anti-atopic dermatitis properties.
