MagSense Imaging Agent (also known as MSH2IA or IBI10103) is a first-of-its-class molecular magnetic resonance imaging (mMRI) contrast agent developed by Imagion Biosystems. The agent consists of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with biocompatible polymers and conjugated with the monoclonal antibody trastuzumab, which targets Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2). Upon administration, the nanoparticles selectively bind to HER2-expressing cancer cells, and their superparamagnetic properties generate unique MRI contrast. This enables non-invasive detection and staging of HER2-positive breast cancer, specifically targeting nodal metastases in the axillary lymph nodes, with greater precision than conventional imaging and without the use of ionizing radiation. The agent is cleared by the liver, where the iron core is metabolized into ferritin.
