MagSense nanoparticles are a targeted diagnostic imaging technology developed by Imagion Biosystems for the detection and characterization of cancer. The platform utilizes PrecisionMRX Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with biocompatible polymers and conjugated with targeting ligands, such as the anti-HER2 antibody trastuzumab. These nanoparticles are designed to bind specifically to cancer cells, where they can be detected using superparamagnetic relaxometry (SPMR) or molecular MRI. Unlike traditional contrast agents, MagSense provides a molecular-specific magnetic signature, allowing for the non-invasive identification of primary and metastatic tumors without the use of ionizing radiation or radioactive tracers. The technology has received FDA Breakthrough Device designation and is primarily being evaluated for HER2-positive breast cancer, with additional research into prostate and ovarian cancers.
