Overview

Mahaenggamsuk-tang (also known as Ma-Xing-Gan-Shi-Tang in Chinese medicine) is a traditional herbal formula widely used in Korea and China for the treatment of respiratory conditions, including pneumonia, bronchitis, and bronchiolitis. The formula consists of four primary herbal ingredients: *Ephedra sinica* (Ephedrae Herba), *Prunus armeniaca* (Armeniacae Semen), *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Glycyrrhizae Radix), and Gypsum Fibrosum. It exerts its therapeutic effects through anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative pathways, specifically by suppressing NF-κB signaling and activating the Nrf2 pathway. It also inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Research has also explored its potential activity against viral infections, including SARS-CoV.
