Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Mahanine** is a natural carbazole alkaloid isolated primarily from the leaves of the edible plant **Murraya koenigii**. It has shown **potent anticancer activity** against various cancer cell lines (breast cancer, prostate cancer, and leukemia) via induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, partly mediated by mitochondrial membrane depolarization and caspase-3 activation. Additionally, mahanine reverses epigenetic silencing (e.g., RASSF1A in prostate cancer), inhibits cancer stem cell self-renewal, and disrupts growth and survival pathways such as JAK/STAT, Src, PI3K/Akt, and p53. Mahanine also demonstrates **antileishmanial activity** via oxidative stress, modulation of the STAT pathway, and upregulation of nitric oxide production, with efficacy in both in vitro and in vivo models. Chemical formula: **C23H25NO2**. Mechanism of action includes DNA minor groove binding, modulation of apoptosis and cell cycle regulators, inhibition of DNMT activity, and alteration of cytokine signaling in immune cells[1][3][5][6][7][9][11].
