Overview

Mahonia aquifolium is a flowering evergreen shrub native to the Pacific Northwest of North America and commonly known as Oregon grape. Its root and wood contain isoquinoline alkaloids such as berberine, jatrorrhizine, palmatine, and magnoflorine. These compounds are believed to provide antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) and anti-inflammatory effects. Mahonia aquifolium has been used in traditional medicine for skin conditions like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis; clinical studies have shown topical preparations can reduce symptoms in mild to moderate cases. The primary mechanism of action is thought to be inhibition of keratinocyte growth (relevant for psoriasis) along with antimicrobial activity due to berberine content[1][2][3][5]. It is available in various forms including creams (such as Reliéva), extracts, supplements, oils, and tinctures.
