Overview
Mahuang Fuzi Soup (also known as Mahuang Fuzi Decoction or Mahuang Fuzi Tang) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula derived from the historical text 'Synopsis of the Golden Chamber' (Jingui Yaolüe) by Dr. Zhong-jing Zhang. The formula traditionally consists of three herbal ingredients: Ephedra (Ma Huang), Prepared Aconite Lateral Root (Fuzi), and Licorice (Gancao). It is clinically utilized for its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and diuretic properties. In modern clinical research, particularly in studies led by the Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mahuang Fuzi Soup is combined with Shenzhuo Soup (forming the Mahuang Fuzi and Shenzhuo Decoction, or MFSD) to treat patients with non-spontaneously remitting membranous nephropathy (MN) presenting with a Shaoyin-Taiyin syndrome pattern. Preclinical studies suggest that its therapeutic effects in membranous nephropathy and diabetic kidney disease are mediated through the regulation of podocyte autophagy, inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and modulation of the IL-6/pSTAT3 inflammatory cascade.
