Overview
Mahuang Tang is a traditional Chinese herbal prescription (THP) that has been used for centuries, originating around 220 AD. It is primarily known for its ability to induce perspiration to relieve exterior pathogenic factors, disperse and open the Lung to relieve asthma and wheezing, and stop coughing, particularly for exterior syndrome due to Wind-Cold. Research indicates it possesses vasorelaxant activities on isolated rat aortic rings. Furthermore, it has demonstrated antiviral effects against influenza A/H1N1 virus in vitro by blocking viral entry into host cells, inhibiting viral biosynthesis, and downregulating the mRNA expression of TLR4, TLR7, MyD88, and TRAF6. The formula is composed of several herbs, including Ma Huang (Ephedra sinica), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon twig), Xing Ren (Apricot kernel), and Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried licorice).
