Overview

MailPan (MAcro-encapsulation of PANcreatic Islets) is an implantable bio-artificial pancreas developed by Defymed for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. The device consists of a biocompatible polymer pouch designed to be surgically implanted in the abdomen. It functions as a cell-based therapy platform by encapsulating insulin-secreting cells, such as pancreatic islets or stem cell-derived beta cells, between two semi-permeable membranes. These membranes are engineered to be selectively permeable, allowing for the diffusion of glucose, oxygen, and nutrients into the device and the release of insulin into the bloodstream, while simultaneously blocking the entry of immune cells and antibodies. This macro-encapsulation approach protects the transplanted cells from host rejection, potentially eliminating the need for long-term immunosuppressive medication.
