Overview
Maimendong Decoction (also known as Mai Men Dong Tang) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula originally described in the *Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber* (Jin Gui Yao Lue). It is primarily used to treat conditions characterized by lung and stomach yin deficiency and rebellious qi. The formula typically consists of six herbal ingredients: *Ophiopogon japonicus* (the sovereign herb), *Pinellia ternata*, *Panax ginseng*, *Glycyrrhiza uralensis*, *Oryza sativa*, and *Ziziphus jujuba*. In modern clinical research, it is evaluated for its efficacy in treating respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis and dry cough, as well as gastrointestinal disorders like reflux esophagitis, particularly when classified under the TCM pattern of stomach heat and yin deficiency. Its pharmacological actions include nourishing yin, moistening the lungs, protecting the esophageal and gastric mucosa, and regulating gastrointestinal motility.
