Overview

Abarceo Pharma's lead development program, often identified in pipeline documentation as its "Main track" or "1st Development Candidate," is a small molecule therapeutic targeting Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel 1 (VDAC1) for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). Founded by researchers from Lund University, Abarceo's approach is based on the discovery that VDAC1 is overexpressed in the pancreatic beta cells of individuals with T2D, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and impaired insulin secretion. By inhibiting or normalizing VDAC1 activity, the therapy aims to restore mitochondrial health and preserve beta-cell function. The program is currently in the preclinical and IND-enabling stages of development.
