Overview

MAIT cell therapy is an allogeneic, off-the-shelf immunotherapy platform being developed by Pluri (formerly Pluristem Therapeutics) for the treatment of solid tumors. The platform utilizes Mucosal-Associated Invariant T (MAIT) cells derived from human placenta, which are expanded using the company's proprietary 3D cell expansion technology. MAIT cells are a unique population of effector T cells that are restricted by the MR1 (Major histocompatibility complex class I-related gene protein) molecule and possess the ability to migrate to tumor sites via high expression of chemokine receptors. Once at the tumor, they exert anti-cancer effects through direct cytotoxicity and the secretion of cytokines to modulate the tumor microenvironment. While the company's core technology is often referred to as the PLX (Placental eXpanded) platform, this MAIT program is distinct from its mesenchymal-like stromal cell candidates (such as PLX-PAD and PLX-R18) and is currently in the discovery phase.
