Target intelligence / Profile preview

Mesothelin (MSLN)

Target
MSLN
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Cell surface protein
01

Overview

Mesothelin is a cell surface glycoprotein overexpressed in several aggressive human cancers, including mesothelioma, pancreatic, ovarian, and lung adenocarcinoma. It is involved in cell adhesion, potentially through interaction with MUC16/CA125, and is a target for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics due to its restricted expression in normal tissues and high prevalence in tumors.

Mechanism of action

Recombinant immunotoxins and monoclonal antibodies targeting mesothelin induce tumor cell death through various mechanisms, including antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC), and/or deliver cytotoxic payloads directly to tumor cells.
