This is a controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) model developed by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). It utilizes live *Plasmodium vivax* sporozoites, delivered via the bites of experimentally infected *Anopheles dirus* mosquitoes, to induce malaria in healthy, malaria-naive volunteers. This biological challenge system is primarily employed in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess the efficacy of candidate malaria vaccines (such as VMP001/AS01B) and new antimalarial drugs. The model provides a standardized, reproducible, and safe environment to study *P. vivax*, which is otherwise difficult to research due to the lack of a continuous in vitro culture system. Participants are closely monitored for the development of parasitemia and are treated with curative doses of chloroquine and primaquine upon diagnosis.
