Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mallotus oppositifolius extract (MOE) is a botanical extract prepared from the leaves of *Mallotus oppositifolius*, a shrub native to tropical Africa. Developed primarily by researchers at the University of Ghana, the extract is being investigated for its neuroprotective, anti-aggressive, and antidepressant-like properties. Preclinical studies suggest that its therapeutic effects are mediated through the modulation of the gut-brain axis (altering the relative abundance of gut microbiota such as *Lactobacilli*, *Desulfovibrio*, and *Parabacteroides*), enhancement of serotonergic neurotransmission (increasing serotonin levels in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus), and inhibition of the glycine/NMDA receptor complex.
