Overview

Mallotusinic acid is a hydrolyzable ellagitannin belonging to the dehydrohexahydroxydiphenoyl (DHHDP) group, naturally occurring in plants such as *Mallotus japonicus* and *Acer pseudosieboldianum*. It has demonstrated significant chemopreventive, anti-proliferative, and pro-apoptotic activities, particularly in prostate cancer cell models. The compound functions as an epigenetic modulator by inhibiting DNA methyltransferases, specifically DNMT1, DNMT3a, and DNMT3b. This inhibition facilitates the demethylation and subsequent re-expression of tumor suppressor genes, such as glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1), which are frequently silenced during the progression of prostate cancer.
