Drug intelligence / Profile preview
maltitol + fructo-oligosaccharides is a combination of a polyol sweetener and a prebiotic fiber. Maltitol is a disaccharide sugar alcohol produced by the hydrogenation of maltose, providing approximately 75-90% of the sweetness of sucrose with a lower caloric value and reduced glycemic response. Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are short-chain fructose polymers that resist digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and undergo fermentation by beneficial bacteria in the colon, such as Bifidobacteria. The combination is frequently utilized in sugar-free food formulations and nutraceutical products to provide sweetness while enhancing the prebiotic profile and potentially mitigating the osmotic laxative effects associated with high polyol intake.
