Maltodextrin is a plant-derived polysaccharide used primarily as an excipient (pharmacologically inactive substance) and food additive. It is produced by hydrolyzing starches from sources such as corn, wheat, potato, rice, or tapioca into a white powder. Maltodextrin is easily digestible and slightly sweet or nearly tasteless. In pharmaceuticals, it serves as a filler or bulking agent in tablets and capsules; in foods, it acts as a thickener, preservative, humectant, anticaking agent, flavoring adjuvant, nutrient supplement, and nutritive sweetener. Maltodextrin rapidly provides glucose upon digestion but can cause spikes in blood sugar levels. A digestion-resistant form of maltodextrin functions as a prebiotic dietary fiber with potential benefits for metabolic health. The FDA generally recognizes maltodextrin as safe for use in foods and medications.
