Overview

Maltose is a disaccharide sugar used as a growth-promoting agent in a specialized cancer therapy regimen developed by Anaeropharma Science. In this context, it is administered intravenously to patients receiving APS001F, a recombinant, non-pathogenic strain of *Bifidobacterium longum*. APS001F is engineered to selectively colonize the hypoxic regions of solid tumors and express the enzyme cytosine deaminase, which converts the prodrug flucytosine (5-FC) into the chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Maltose serves as a selective nutrient source to enhance the proliferation and metabolic activity of the bacteria within the tumor microenvironment, thereby facilitating the localized production of 5-FU and potentially improving the anti-tumor efficacy of the APS001F system.
