Mandelic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. In dermatological applications, it acts as a chemical exfoliant and keratolytic agent by dissolving the intercellular glue that binds dead skin cells together and softening keratin plugs. A 0.2% topical mandelic acid body scrub, developed by the Beijing Technology and Business University in collaboration with Shandong Huawutang Biotechnology, has been clinically evaluated as part of an 'Exfoliate-Dissolve-Repair' (EDR) skin care regimen. When paired with a 0.5% ceramide NP-containing body lotion, this regimen targets the hyperkeratinization of hair follicles to treat keratosis pilaris, demonstrating efficacy and safety compared to standard 0.1% tretinoin cream.
