Overview

Mangaciclanol (GEH200486) is a macrocyclic manganese-based contrast agent (MnBCA) developed by GE Healthcare for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is designed to enhance the detection and characterization of lesions in the central nervous system (CNS) and other body tissues by shortening the T1 relaxation time of water protons, thereby increasing signal intensity on T1-weighted images. As a manganese-based agent, it serves as a potential alternative to gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), aiming to provide high diagnostic efficacy while avoiding the specific safety concerns associated with gadolinium retention in tissues. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 2/3 clinical trials, such as the LUMINA study, to assess its efficacy and safety in adult patients referred for contrast-enhanced MRI.
