Overview
Mangafodipir trisodium is a paramagnetic manganese-based contrast agent being repurposed by IC Targets AS for cardiac imaging, specifically for Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF). Originally marketed as Teslascan for liver and pancreatic imaging, the agent is a chelate of manganese (Mn2+) and fodipir (dipyridoxyl diphosphate). It functions as a calcium analog, where the manganese ions are taken up by cardiomyocytes via voltage-gated calcium channels. This uptake allows for Manganese-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MEMRI), providing a diagnostic tool to quantify myocardial manganese uptake rates and characterize cellular function and calcium handling in heart diseases such as HFpEF, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and cardiac amyloidosis.
