Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), also known as SOD2, is a critical mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. This process is essential for protecting cells, particularly the mitochondria, from oxidative stress and subsequent damage. In therapeutic development, MnSOD is being explored primarily through gene therapy and cell therapy approaches. For instance, ex vivo MnSOD gene transfer into endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) has been shown to restore their angiogenic and wound-healing capabilities in diabetic models, where MnSOD expression is typically deficient. Additionally, MnSOD-based therapies are investigated for their potential to mitigate radiation-induced tissue injury and other conditions characterized by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.
