Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mangifera indica extract refers to concentrated preparations made from parts of the mango (Mangifera indica) tree, primarily leaves, bark, seeds, or fruit. Used in traditional medicine, especially in Ayurvedic practices, these extracts contain diverse bioactive phytochemicals such as mangiferin (a polyphenolic antioxidant and xanthone), flavonoids, phenols, and terpenoids. The extract exhibits multiple biological activities including **antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, hypolipidemic, and wound-healing effects**. The antidiabetic action is primarily through **inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase**, delaying carbohydrate absorption. The extract modulates inflammatory pathways (e.g., by suppressing NF-κB), enhances glutathione levels, and may suppress viral replication in vitro. While mangiferin is identified as a primary active ingredient, other phytoconstituents contribute to the pharmacological activity. Mangifera indica extract is used in both traditional medicinal preparations and as a dietary supplement[2][3][4].
