Mangifera indica pollen is a biological allergen extract derived from the pollen of the Mangifera indica (mango) tree, a member of the Anacardiaceae family. It is primarily utilized as a diagnostic agent in clinical allergy practice to identify IgE-mediated sensitization in patients suspected of having mango pollen hypersensitivity. The extract is typically used in skin prick testing (SPT) or intradermal testing, where it interacts with allergen-specific IgE antibodies bound to mast cells and basophils. This interaction triggers the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, resulting in a wheal-and-flare reaction that confirms sensitization. While mango fruit ingestion is a more common cause of allergic reactions (often due to cross-reactivity with other Anacardiaceae like poison ivy), the pollen itself is a significant aeroallergen in tropical and subtropical regions where mango trees are prevalent.
