Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mangosteen extract is derived from the fruit or pericarp (hull) of the Garcinia mangostana tree, native to Southeast Asia. It is commonly used as a dietary supplement and in traditional medicine for its purported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer properties. The main bioactive compounds are xanthones (such as alpha-mangostin), which have demonstrated various biological activities in laboratory studies including inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), free-radical scavenging activity, modulation of AMP-activated protein kinase and Sirtuin 1 in the liver (potentially contributing to antiobesity effects), aromatase inhibition, cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines, and immunomodulatory effects. Despite these findings from preclinical research and small human studies suggesting possible benefits for gum health (periodontitis) and inflammation reduction, there is insufficient clinical evidence to support most health claims made about mangosteen extract[1][2][3][4][5].
