PSK-mannitol is a generic intravenous formulation of mannitol, a small molecule sugar alcohol that functions as an osmotic diuretic. Developed by Puniska Healthcare (now a subsidiary of Amneal Pharmaceuticals), it is primarily used to reduce elevated intracranial pressure and treat cerebral edema by drawing fluid out of tissues through osmotic pressure. Additionally, it is indicated for the promotion of diuresis in the prevention or treatment of the oliguric phase of acute renal failure and for the reduction of high intraocular pressure. As an osmotic agent, mannitol is not significantly metabolized and is filtered by the glomeruli without substantial tubular reabsorption, thereby increasing the osmotic pressure of the glomerular filtrate and hindering water reabsorption in the kidneys.
