Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mannitol + sodium chloride is a fixed-dose combination intravenous solution used as an osmotic diuretic and electrolyte replenisher. Mannitol, a sugar alcohol, increases the osmotic pressure of the glomerular filtrate, which inhibits the tubular reabsorption of water and electrolytes, thereby promoting diuresis. This mechanism is utilized clinically to reduce intracranial pressure, treat cerebral edema, lower elevated intraocular pressure, and promote the urinary excretion of toxic substances. The inclusion of sodium chloride in the formulation helps maintain extracellular fluid volume and electrolyte balance, preventing the depletion that can occur during rapid osmotic diuresis. It is also indicated for the prevention or treatment of the oliguric phase of acute renal failure.
