Overview

Mannoheptulose is a naturally occurring seven-carbon monosaccharide (heptose) and ketose found in plants such as avocados, alfalfa, figs, and primrose. It acts as a competitive and non-competitive inhibitor of both hexokinase and glucokinase enzymes. By blocking these enzymes, mannoheptulose prevents the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate—the first step in glycolysis—thereby inhibiting glucose breakdown. This inhibition also leads to reduced insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells because ATP production is diminished, which disrupts the closure of KATP channels required for insulin release. Mannoheptulose has been studied primarily as a research tool in carbohydrate metabolism and for its potential use as a nutraceutical for weight management in dogs; however, evidence regarding its efficacy on energy expenditure is mixed[1][2][3][5][6][7].
