Overview

Manshenkang (MSKG) is a traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) formula used for the treatment of chronic renal failure and renal fibrosis. It is a multi-component herbal preparation comprising eight botanical and natural ingredients: *Rheum tanguticum*, *Salvia miltiorrhiza*, *Citrus × aurantium*, *Codonopsis pilosula*, *Polygonatum cyrtonema*, *Smilax glabra*, *Ostrea rivularis*, and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis*. Research indicates that Manshenkang exerts its therapeutic effects by regulating the PDE4b/cAMP/Epac1 signaling pathway. Specifically, it inhibits the expression of phosphodiesterase 4b (PDE4b), which leads to increased levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and activation of the exchange protein directly activated by cAMP 1 (Epac1). This mechanism helps alleviate renal fibrosis, reduce serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels, and improve creatinine clearance and renal blood flow in animal models of chronic renal failure.
