Overview

Manuka honey is a natural product derived from the nectar of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand. It is distinguished by its high concentration of methylglyoxal (MGO), a compound responsible for its potent antibacterial activity. Manuka honey also contains hydrogen peroxide and other bioactive compounds such as phenolics and flavonoids that contribute to its antimicrobial effects[1][2][3][8]. The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) rating system measures the antibacterial potency of different batches based on MGO content[2][5]. Clinically, Manuka honey is primarily used topically for wound and burn healing due to its ability to inhibit bacterial growth—including antibiotic-resistant strains like Staphylococcus aureus—and promote tissue repair by modulating cytokine production and lowering wound pH[3][4][5]. It has also shown potential benefits in oral health, cough suppression, gastric ulcer prevention, and as an adjunct in treating upper respiratory infections[4]. The U.S. FDA approved medical-grade Manuka honey dressings for wound care in 2007[8].
