Overview
Manuka oil is a plant-derived essential oil extracted from the manuka plant (*Leptospermum scoparium*), native to New Zealand. It is being investigated by the University of Otago (Sir John Walsh Research Institute, Faculty of Dentistry) as a topical antimicrobial agent for the treatment of gingivitis and periodontal disease. The oil's primary bioactive constituents are triketones, including leptospermone and related beta-triketones, which exhibit potent antibacterial activity against gram-negative periodontal pathogens. In clinical research, it has been formulated as a topical hydrogel and evaluated in randomized controlled trials for human experimental gingivitis. Additionally, research has explored nanoencapsulated chitosan-based delivery systems to enhance its therapeutic efficacy in the oral cavity.
