Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Maqianzi Zongjian Nangpao Gel is a topical botanical drug candidate developed by Zhangzhou Pientzehuang Pharmaceutical for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The formulation contains total alkaloids extracted from the seeds of *Strychnos nux-vomica* (Maqianzi), primarily strychnine and brucine, which are encapsulated within a vesicular (niosomal or liposomal) delivery system. This advanced drug delivery technology is designed to enhance the transdermal penetration of the alkaloids and provide sustained release at the site of inflammation, thereby maximizing local analgesic and anti-inflammatory efficacy while minimizing systemic absorption and the associated risk of strychnine toxicity. The drug is currently undergoing clinical evaluation in China to assess its safety and effectiveness in reducing pain and improving joint function in patients with osteoarthritis.
