Overview
Maraviroc is a small molecule chemokine receptor antagonist developed by Pfizer. It is used in combination with other antiretroviral medications to treat CCR5-tropic HIV-1 infection in adults and children weighing at least 2 kg. Maraviroc works as an entry inhibitor by selectively binding to the human chemokine receptor CCR5 on the surface of CD4 cells (T-cells), thereby preventing HIV-1 gp120 from interacting with CCR5 and blocking viral entry into host cells. This mechanism helps reduce viral load and slows immune system decline but does not cure HIV or AIDS[3][9][10].
