Overview

Maraviroc + protease inhibitors refers to the combination of maraviroc, a CCR5 co-receptor antagonist, with one or more HIV protease inhibitors as part of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Maraviroc blocks the CCR5 receptor on immune cells, preventing HIV from entering and infecting these cells. Protease inhibitors inhibit the activity of the HIV-1 protease enzyme, which is essential for viral replication and maturation. This combination is used in patients with confirmed CCR5-tropic HIV-1 and is typically reserved for those who are treatment-experienced or have specific indications based on resistance profiles. The dosing of maraviroc must be adjusted when used with most protease inhibitors due to drug-drug interactions mediated by CYP3A4 metabolism[2][4]. The primary indication is for use in combination ART regimens to suppress viral load and increase CD4 cell counts in people living with HIV.
