Maraviroc IVR refers to an intravaginal ring (IVR) formulation of maraviroc, a small molecule CCR5 antagonist. Maraviroc is primarily known as an antiretroviral drug used in combination therapy for the treatment of CCR5-tropic HIV-1 infection. Its mechanism of action involves selectively and reversibly binding to the human chemokine receptor CCR5 on CD4+ T-cells, thereby blocking the interaction between HIV-1 gp120 and CCR5, which prevents viral entry into host cells[1][2][7]. The standard oral formulation is approved for use in HIV treatment; however, the "IVR" designation indicates a novel delivery system—an intravaginal ring—intended for localized prevention (pre-exposure prophylaxis) against sexual transmission of HIV. This formulation aims to provide sustained release of maraviroc at mucosal surfaces to block local infection by CCR5-tropic strains of HIV.
