Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Marham Asfedaj (also known as Marham-e-Asfedaj) is a traditional Unani (Greco-Arab) topical multi-ingredient ointment formulation being investigated for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis (known in Unani medicine as 'Taqashshur-al-Jild') and other inflammatory skin conditions. It is formulated as a botanical/herbal and mineral-based ointment, traditionally containing ingredients such as zinc oxide (asfedaj/safeda) and other natural components. The National Institute of Unani Medicine in Bengaluru, India, is evaluating its efficacy and safety in clinical trials, including a Phase 2 randomized, open-label, split-body active-controlled trial comparing topical Marham Asfedaj against a standard Coal Tar 1% and Salicylic Acid 3% solution, both administered alongside oral Unani formulations. Its therapeutic mechanism is based on traditional Unani principles of detergent (jali), emollient (murakhi), and anti-inflammatory (mohallil) actions.
