Overview

Marijuana + naloxone is an investigational combination therapy being studied by the New York State Psychiatric Institute for the treatment of naloxone-precipitated opioid withdrawal. The therapy consists of vaporized botanical marijuana (containing approximately 11.7% THC and 0.04% CBD) administered in conjunction with intranasal naloxone. The rationale behind this combination is to utilize the analgesic and sedative properties of cannabinoids, mediated through the CB1 and CB2 receptors, to attenuate the acute and severe withdrawal symptoms that occur when naloxone is used to reverse an opioid overdose. This proof-of-concept study aims to improve the tolerability of overdose reversal agents in individuals with opioid use disorder.
