Overview

Marine chondroitin sulfate is a specific form of chondroitin sulfate, a sulfated glycosaminoglycan, derived from marine sources such as fish, shark, or squid. Developed by IBSA Institut Biochimique SA, it is primarily investigated for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Unlike bovine-derived chondroitin sulfate, marine-derived versions often exhibit different ratios of chondroitin-4-sulfate (GlcUA-GalNAc4S) and chondroitin-6-sulfate (GlcUA-GalNAc6S), which may influence its biological activity and bioavailability. Its mechanism of action involves anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects, including the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), the suppression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and ADAMTS enzymes that degrade cartilage, and the stimulation of extracellular matrix components like hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans. It is classified as a Symptomatic Slow-Acting Drug for Osteoarthritis (SYSADOA).
