Marinus is a marine-derived small molecule antibacterial agent being developed by Aphios Corporation. It is derived from a library of over 2,000 unique marine microorganisms collected from diverse environments, including deep-sea sediments, shallow water mangrove swamps, and hydrothermal vents. The compound is specifically designed to combat multi-drug resistant Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE), and Bacillus anthracis (anthrax). Its mechanism of action involves the disruption of bacterial cell membranes and/or bacterial metabolism. Marinus is currently in preclinical development and targets the global market for infectious diseases caused by resistant pathogens.
