Maropitant is a small molecule neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptor antagonist developed by Zoetis for veterinary use, primarily in dogs and cats. It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of acute vomiting and motion sickness. Maropitant works by selectively blocking the NK1 receptor, thereby inhibiting the action of substance P—a key neurotransmitter involved in emesis—within both central (vomiting center, chemoreceptor trigger zone) and peripheral pathways. This broad-spectrum antiemetic effect makes it effective against a wide range of emetogenic stimuli. In addition to its antiemetic properties, maropitant may have mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects due to its influence on substance P-mediated processes[3][4][5][6][7][8].
