This investigational cell therapy, developed by the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) for the treatment of severe pulmonary emphysema. Administered via intrabronchial or intratracheal delivery, the therapy is evaluated in combination with the placement of a Zephyr Endobronchial Valve (EBV) as part of the CEL&VAL clinical trial. The mechanism of action involves the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs, which aim to reduce the chronic inflammatory process and alveolar destruction characteristic of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Clinical data from Phase I studies published in 2017 demonstrated that the combined use of EBV and MSCs was safe and resulted in improved quality-of-life indicators and reduced systemic inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein.
